A Tshechu is not a performance staged for tourists — it is a religious festival where communities receive blessings. Visitors are warmly welcomed, but a few courtesies go a long way.

  • Dress smartly; wearing a gho or kira is appreciated, and your guide can help.
  • Do not walk across the dance ground or stand in front of seated locals.
  • Avoid flash photography and never use drones.
  • Do not touch masks, costumes or ritual objects.
  • Be patient — festivals run all day, and the atsaras (clowns) may tease you! It is all in good humour.
