Perched 900 metres above the Paro valley, Taktsang Palphug Monastery is the iconic image of Bhutan. The hike is moderate and suitable for most reasonably fit travellers.

The trail

The round trip is about 6.5 km with roughly 500 m of ascent, taking 4–6 hours including time at the monastery. The path climbs through blue pine forest to a cafeteria viewpoint at the halfway mark, then continues to a lookout opposite the monastery before a final descent and climb of around 700 steps past a waterfall.

Tips

  • Start early (by 8 am) to avoid the midday sun and crowds.
  • Wear proper walking shoes and bring water and a light layer.
  • Ponies can carry you to the cafeteria, but not beyond.
  • Dress modestly: long sleeves and long trousers or skirts are required inside. Cameras and bags are left at the entrance.
