Heart of Bhutan: Bumthang Discovery
Eleven days crossing the kingdom’s central passes to Trongsa and the sacred valleys of Bumthang.
Ancestral seat of the Wangchuck dynasty
Bhutan’s largest dzong cascades down a ridge at the strategic heart of the kingdom.
Trongsa Dzong, the largest dzong in Bhutan, spills down a steep spur above the Mangde Chhu gorge. Because the only east–west road once passed directly through its courtyards, whoever held Trongsa controlled the country — and the first two kings of Bhutan both served as Penlop (governor) of Trongsa before ascending the throne. The tradition continues: the Crown Prince is still invested as Trongsa Penlop.
Above the dzong, the Ta Dzong watchtower houses the Royal Heritage Museum, with royal artefacts and a fine collection of statues.
