Glacial valley of the black-necked cranes
A broad, bowl-shaped glacial valley where endangered black-necked cranes arrive from Tibet each winter.
Phobjikha is one of Bhutan’s most important wildlife reserves: a wide, marshy glacial valley on the western slopes of the Black Mountains. From late October to February it becomes the winter home of several hundred black-necked cranes, which circle Gangtey Goenpa three times on arrival — so local tradition says.
Gangtey Goenpa, a 17th-century Nyingma monastery restored with traditional craftsmanship, overlooks the valley. The gentle Gangtey Nature Trail descends through pine forest and farmland, and the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre offers telescopes for watching the birds without disturbing them.
Because the valley is protected, there are few overhead power lines and only small farmhouse lodges — making Phobjikha one of the most peaceful places to stay in Bhutan.
