Grand Bhutan: West to East Traverse
A fifteen-day overland adventure across every major pass to the rarely visited east — Mongar, Lhuentse and Trashigang.
Jewel of the east
Eastern Bhutan’s largest district, a hub of markets, the Sharchop people and the semi-nomadic Brokpa of Merak and Sakteng.
Trashigang Dzong, built in 1659 on a spur high above the Gamri Chhu, once controlled all of eastern Bhutan. The town is a lively trading centre where semi-nomadic Brokpa herders from Merak and Sakteng come to market in their distinctive yak-hair hats.
Nearby lie the pilgrimage temple of Gom Kora, the weaving village of Radhi and the bustling college town of Kanglung. From here, travellers can exit to India via Samdrup Jongkhar.
