Wangdue Phodrang

Ridge-top fortress above the Punatsang Chhu

About Wangdue Phodrang

A historic district town whose dzong, rebuilt after a 2012 fire, guards the routes into central Bhutan.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong was founded in 1638 on a narrow ridge above the confluence of the Punatsang Chhu and Dang Chhu rivers. Fire destroyed it in 2012; its painstaking reconstruction using traditional methods was completed in 2022, and the restored dzong is once again the venue for the autumn Wangdue Tshechu.

Wangdue is a natural stop between Punakha and Phobjikha, known for its slate carving and bamboo weaving.
