Western Bhutan
Haa Valley
Hidden valley beyond Chele La
About Haa Valley
Opened to visitors only in 2002, Haa is a quiet alpine valley of nomadic heritage, white and black temples, and rolling forested ridges.
Reached via Chele La (3,988 m), the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, Haa feels a world away from the busier western valleys. The twin temples of Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple) sit at the heart of local legend, and the three hills behind them — Rigsum Gonpo — are revered as the abodes of three bodhisattvas.
Haa is ideal for homestays, gentle hikes to Juneydrag hermitage, and the Haa Summer Festival, which celebrates nomadic culture with yak-herder sports, local cuisine and traditional games.
